Though school is out, our prevention work continues! This summer has been filled with farmer’s markets, SEEK camp and a conference in Alabama for our Thrives staff. This week however, we are back in the office and feeling a bit disconnected from the West River Valley community…so, we figured we’d give a shoutout to all of our local parents! Hopefully you are all out swimming and hiking and eating ice-cream, but please keep us in mind as we coast into the end of summer and the beginning of the school year! This year we will continue to offer the Refuse to Use program for all High School students at Leland & Gray. Our Above the Influence youth group will also be looking for new recruits this month and next! Additionally, we will be bringing in speakers throughout the year to talk about substance abuse as well as hosting discussions on the topic for interested parents and community members. Contact us to get involved in planning or attending any/all events…we are always looking for passionate individuals to get involved in our coalition!
Lastly, I’d love to share a great resource created by the national Partnership for Drug Free Kids. This “parent talk kit” is a resource for tackling conversations that might be difficult for you and your teen. The kit outlines potential scenarios that might come up, questions that your child might ask, as well as tips and tools for talking about drugs and alcohol. We look forward to seeing y’all in September! In the meantime, if any parent is interested in participating in a 30-minute interview, please contact Kate at wrvthrives@gmail.com. River Bend Gift Card to any interviewee!
Happy Summer!
